Ten Types of Massage Therapies

1. Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage, also referred to as massage therapy, is the most common massage offered in the U.S. This massage features long strokes coupled with circular motions and kneading movements. This type of the massage works the superficial layers of the muscles. If you have never had a massage, you should opt for this type of massage. It uses very gentle strokes, coupled with massage oils. The Swedish massage is the most relaxing type of massages available.

2. Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage utilizes the beneficial properties of essential oils. Many people do not realize that essential oils not only smell great, but also provide many healing benefits. There are essential oils that help relieve stress, energize you or relax you. For example, lavender is used to give a sense of relaxation and balance. This essential oil is one of the most common oils used in aromatherapy massage. The essential oil is blended with a carrier oil and massaged into the skin to banish stress while relaxing the muscles.

3. Hot Stone Massage

This type of massage uses heated, smooth stones. The stones are laid on tense muscles. As the heat soaks into your tense muscles, they unwind and loosen. After the stones have loosened up your tense muscles, the massage therapist Uses them to rub the tension out of still muscles. This type of massage is perfect for those who have muscle tension but want a gentle massage.

4. Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage gets to the deeper layers of connective tissues and muscles in the body. This type of massage uses deep strokes that go against the grain of the muscles to help relieve chronically tense or painful muscles caused by repetitive injuries, posture issues or accidental injuries. Because this massage affects the deep tissues in the body, you may feel sore for a couple of days following this type of massage.

5. Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu is a massage therapy developed in Japan that uses rhythmic sequencing and finger pressure on acupuncture points. With this type of massage, the finger is pressed into the acupuncture point for a few seconds to relax tense muscles and improve the flow of Qi (the body’s energy) to help the body heal itself. Although the pressure is firm with Shiatsu, there is typically no soreness following the massage.

6. Thai Massage

Thai massage is similar to Shiatsu in that it seeks to restore energy flow in the body using acupressure points; however, the Thai massage also incorporates stretches and compressions. With other massage techniques, the person lays on the table while the massage is done; with Thai massage, the massage therapist moves the person in a variety of postures and stretches similar to yoga. This type of massage improves range of motion flexibility, reduces stress and is more energizing than other types of massage therapy.

7. Prenatal Massage

Prenatal, or pregnancy, massage is very popular among expectant mothers. This type of massage should only be done by a massage therapist who is certified to do prenatal massage because they must know how to position and support a woman’s body during the massage. Certain massage techniques are modified to reduce strain on the expectant mother and the baby. This type of massage is customized the pregnant woman’s needs and may be used for stress reduction, pain relief, inflammation and swelling and anxiety.

8. Reflexology

Reflexology is often thought of as no more than a foot massage; however, it is so much more than that. Specific points on the foot correspond to systems and organs throughout the body. The locations are pressed to restore and improve bodily functions. This type of massage is great for those with tired achy feet and is very relaxing and calming.

9. Sports Massage

Sports massage is designed for those who are physically active. Many people think this type of massage is only for professional athletes; however, it can be used by anyone who participates in sports or is physically active. This type of massage is used to prevent or treat injuries and enhance the athlete’s performance. Sports massage uses a variety of strokes and stretches to loosen tight muscles and improve flexibility. The strokes are fast to help improve blood flow in the area to encourage healing.

10. Back Massage

Certain massage therapist and spas offer 30 minute back massages. If the massage therapist or spa does not offer this type of massage, you can book a massage and request the therapist to concentrate on your back.
